UCF is reminding fans that firearms remain prohibited at all athletic events even though open carry is now legal in Florida.
The UCF Police Department said there are still important restrictions with open carry, especially when it comes to college and university campuses.
Firearms remain prohibited at UCF, including at all athletic events. The University of Central Florida said it desires to maintain a safe environment for all of its students, faculty and staff members, contractors, and visitors.
This gun policy seeks to reduce the risk of injury or death associated with the intentional or accidental use of weapons.
UCF prohibits the possession, use, or storage of weapons on property owned or controlled by the University of Central Florida, including in a university vehicle, on one’s person, or in one’s office or residence hall. Additionally, the University of Central Florida prohibits the possession, use, or storage of weapons at events sponsored or hosted by the University of Central Florida, except as outlined in the policy.
The university defines firearm as any weapon (including a starter gun) which will, is designed to, or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of any such weapon; any firearm muffler or silencer; any destructive device; or any machine gun.
The university defines weapon as a thing designed or intended, or which may reasonably be used for inflicting bodily harm. The term “weapon” includes firearms, swords, knives (except common pocketknives), incendiary devices, chemical devices, or missiles. The term “weapon” includes any object legally controlled as a weapon or treated as a weapon under the laws of the jurisdiction in which the university owned or controlled property is located.
