Local. Organic. Slow Food. We’ve all seen and heard the buzz words about the food, farmers, and food producers in our area. This November, the Winter Park Harvest Festival, will aim to illustrate and clarify what it means to eat local. This community-driven event will be held Saturday, November 20 on Park Avenue’s West Meadow. (Just behind the post office.)
The inaugural festival will be a one-day gathering of local farms, food artisans, gardening experts, and community members. A 100% local farmers’ market during the day will offer visitors everything they need to make a locally sourced Thanksgiving dinner, from sweet potatoes and cauliflower to eggs, cheese, and desserts.
There will be more than 10 seminars and instructional sessions about several diverse topics including growing your own edible garden, supporting local food producers, food and farm policy, and more. Representatives from Slow Food Orlando will share their experience from their recent trip to an international local food conference in Italy.
A special section of the festival will be dedicated to more than 100 “grow boxes” designed for vegetable gardens. Churches, schools, and community groups in and around Winter Park have taken boxes to fill and nurture; their results will be displayed at the festival.
Finally, on Saturday night, the festival will culminate in a Farm to Table Dinner featuring chefs from the Ravenous Pig, Luma on Park, Antonio’s, Mi Tomatina, Cuisiniers, and Big Wheel Provisions. Wines from Tim’s Wine, and a signature autumn cocktail will accompany the delicious, locally sourced cuisine. Suppliers will include Deep Creek Ranch, Waterkist Farms, Heart of Christmas Farm, Lake Meadow Naturals, and more.

Local farms and locally produced food is more important (and more talked about) than it ever has been before. The economy seriously depends on keeping money in our community, by supporting central-Florida-based companies. We think that farms, food artisans and restaurants are one of the best ways to keep business local.
You list the date of the Winter Park Harvest Festival 2013 to be on
Saturday, November 20 on Park Avenue’s West Meadow.
In the Travel and Entertainment Guide, the picture of the festival banner also lists the date as NOVEMBER 20.
That should be NOVEMBER 23, IF IT IS ON A SATURDAY !
