Whoa! Drugs Could Cost More Under Obamacare

Depending on where you live, cancer patients might well face high costs of medications under President Barack Obama’s health care law and if you live in Florida, the picture is still very murky, according to industry analysts.

Some states, in an effort to keep premiums low are letting insurers charge patients a significant share of the cost for expensive drugs used to treat chronic diseases like cancer, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, huffingtonpost.com reported.  In states like California, “speciality drugs” can cost thousands of dollars a month.

On the other hand, New York is setting a flat dollar copayment for medications for these drugs, the highest being $70 per month, huffingtonpost.com also reported.

In Florida, the situation is unclear regarding patients with chronic diseases and the uninsured generally.  What is known however is, the GOP-led Florida Legislature ended its session earlier this month, turning its back on $50 billion from Washington that could have provided health care coverage to about 1.2 million uninsured Floridians over the next decade.  And it doesn’t appear that the Rick Scott administration and GOP lawmakers are in any hurry to find a solution to cover the millions that remain uninsured in the Sunshine state.
