Florida Polytechnic University leaders voted Monday to offer $5,000 annual scholarships for the first three years and $3,200 the fourth year, all to try to draw top-notch students to the new school.
“Why are we doing this? Not being accredited, this would be incentive to get students to come here,” said board Chairman Rob Gidel, the ledger.com reported. “What we are being asked to do today is essentially underwrite this from our budget.”
About 275 full-time students are expected to make up the inaugural class that begins next fall and would likely receive the scholarships. The $5,000 would cover roughly a quarter of the cost of a year of study, based on an estimated total of $19,000 for tuition, housing, meals, books and miscellaneous costs, the paper also reported.
