Is it just me – or is it the older we get, the less important having more “stuff” or being self-consumed becomes? This Labor Day has me reevaluating my life. According to Wikipedia, Labor Day was created to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers in the U.S. I have come to the conclusion that there must be much more to my life’s work than earning money to pay the bills, buy stuff, and have a little fun. (Daniel’s Company provides a service to our clients by helping them to have beautiful surroundings to enjoy coming home to, or for entertaining their guests.) Yet I know there’s more to my business life. I wonder at my deeper purpose in life. What is there only I could do with the unique gifts, talents, and experiences that I have been given?
It all started when I found out about Fuel My School founded by one of our clients Lisa Hilgenfeldt and her sister. Fuel My School allows you to give to your child’s school here in Central Florida while shopping online at no additional costs to you. For more info visit www.fuelmyschool.com. Like her, I want to make a difference in my community. Unlike me she is doing more than just tithing or writing the occasional check to send to her favorite charity.
Now with my daughter required to also do community service as part of her middle school education, I’ve got to a better job teaching the next generation. I must teach both my children now that there is more to life than just making money to buy stuff. Each of us has a responsibility to bear fruits (make a positive difference) whether tenfold, thirtyfold or a hundredfold. So, if like me you’re not already doing your life’s work, then take some time this week to think about your own unique talents, gifts, and experiences.
