WCF honors seniors by connecting them to low-paying jobs

walmart-greeterWorkforce Central Florida (WCF) is honoring National Employ Older Workers Week by highlighting services to improve employability skills and help seniors find jobs.

In addition to highlighting WCF’s services, the employment and placement group has teamed up with Experience Works to place seniors in minimum wage jobs, at local nonprofits and government agencies, a statement from the Workforce board said.

Metro Orlando’s media pay was recently ranked the lowest among the nation’s 50 biggest metropolitan areas and it has the largest share of jobs – 37 percent – paying less than $25,000 a year.

WCF works also with AARP to provide additional employment and community services to individuals 55 and over. The agency offers computer classes at no cost from the basic PC 101 to advanced courses that cover the Microsoft Office Suite of Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. The self-paced classes can be taken at home or at one of our six WCF offices.

Develop You classes that include tips on interviewing, networking and resume writing, are also offered. Two classes designed specifically for older workers, “Job Search Advice for the Mature Job Seeker,”  and “How to Overcome the Challenge of Being Over Qualified” teach seniors how to use their age and experience as an advantage.
