Former Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich, currently Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, in the video above, explains how Walmart, the richest family in America, can pay its workers $15/hour and still be very successful.
Reich notes the Waltons collect $8.5 million in Walmart dividends every day and that workers helped build that fortune. But, many have to support themselves with food stamps and food drives.
If workers were paid $15/hour, not only will this help the entire economy, but at least 5 million Americans households will be impacted, he argues.
Reich says one of the key things about raising the minimum wage is that it will also reverse the estimated $6 billion that goes to Walmart workers in the form of Medicaid, food stamps and other programs to help them scrape by.
