The race for Orange County Commission, District 6, is more than eight months away, but businessman Derrick Wallace knows there is no way to win without the assistance of competent and responsible volunteers.
At a Fish Fry on Saturday at Wallace’s Campaign Headquarters at 2000 Bruton Avenue, in the heart of the district in which he is running, more than 40 volunteers showed up to deep-fry and serve fish, along with chips and grits.
Organized by campaign volunteers, Wallace said, this is the second fundraiser Fish Fry the campaign has held and going forward, every first Saturday of each month, others will take place throughout the life of the Campaign.
Eric Jones is one of those who has volunteered to work on the campaign. A trucker by day, Jones brings 12 years of deep-frying fish experience – which was evident.
“Besides knowing Mr. Wallace for sometime, I volunteered to work on the Campaign because I believe in his message of wanting to make things better for the people in the community,” Jones said, when asked about his involvement.
Asked what was the secret to making such tasty fish fry, Jones was a little bit coy, but said, “you know it’s done when the fish starts to float.”
Delores Lewis, another campaign volunteer, knows a thing or two about deep-frying fish and chips too. She and Jones were the fish fry gurus at today’s event. And like Jones, Lewis has volunteered because she thinks Wallace, if elected to the Orange County Commission, will work hard on behalf of the people in the district.
“Mr. Wallace is a doer… I have seen him support many community activities over the years and I believe that he is the best candidate for the job,” Lewis said.
For Wallace’s part, he is grateful that he has a committed group of volunteers already working on his Campaign.
“I feel very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers who will like to see me win, at this stage of the Campaign,” he said. “They bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but every facet of the Campaign can use volunteer help and we will continue to sign up more workers in the weeks and months ahead.”
