Dodge Neon – Deputies are searching for a ‘vehicle of interest’ in the murder of Elena Ortega, which looks similar to this.

Deputies are looking for a red Dodge Neon vehicle that could be connected to the brutal murder of an 83-year-old woman on Orange County’s east side.

Investigators say, the “vehicle of interest” was occupied by 2 dark-skinned males, either African-American or Hispanic, and was spotted driving in the area of 5020 Turnbull Drive between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while the crime scene was still active.

Elena Ortega, 83, was found dead in a home in the 5000 block of Turnbull Drive off Hoffner Avenue, around 6:30 a.m., on Wednesday, after investigators were alerted to smoke coming from the home.

Ortega’s body, found inside the home, showed signs of trauma and investigators say, the fire was deliberately set, possibly to cover up her murder.

Investigators have not said how Ortega was killed, but neighbors report hearing gunshots during the night, according to news reports.

Ortega lived alone, and used a walker to get around.

Anyone with information on this crime or who might have seen a red Dodge Neon vehicle, similar to the one pictured, is urged to call Crimeline at # 1-800-423-TIPS.
