USF Student Drowns in Underwater Cave

A University of South Florida (USF), Tampa student drowned in an underwater cave on Sunday, law enforcement officers said.

22-year-old Amy Ryan, of Palm Bay, who had gone swimming with her boyfriend and another couple in the Chassahowitzka Cave off of S. Riviera Point, failed to surface.

Attempts by her friends to locate Amy in the underwater cave,were unsuccessful.

A Citrus County firefighter with rescue diving experience was able to locate Amy around 6:30 pm, and pull her from a portion of the cave where was lodged.

Amy was transported to Oak Hill Hospital in Hernando County, where she was pronounced deceased.

Citrus County Sheriff’s deputies said, the investigation into Ryan’s drowning is continuing.
