Martin Luther King once said that “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
In today’s society the opportunity to give is often shrouded by offerings of money or opportunity. With unemployment numbers hovering in the low teens and the gap between the haves and have nots continuing to expand, the capacity that many have for giving back is shrinking.
But the Young Professionals of the Central Florida Urban League (CFULYP) are showing that giving back has its own rewards and that having a healthy community equates to a working community.
On Saturday the Central Florida Urban League Young Professionals held its annual national day of service. This year the chapter placed an emphasis on educating the community on the importance of healthy living by offering free health screenings, HIV/AIDS testing, and other health-related tests.
CFULYP President Karen Anderson further expounded upon the importance of a healthy community.
“As young professionals in Central Florida, it is our responsibility to assist our community in educating them on issues that affect us everyday,” said Anderson.
“Our focus this year was Health & Quality of Life and as a chapter, we have taken on the initiative of Childhood Obesity prevention. We did so along with 55+ chapters across the country promoting Health & Quality of Life and it was the perfect time to do so,” Anderson continued.
The health festival was held at the Nap Ford Community School and featured games and activities for kids that encouraged physical fitness.
