More than 20 AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) representatives are currently needed to serve as School-Based Volunteer Program Coordinators with United Way’s Schools and Communities: Together for Tomorrow program.
Launched last year as the Interfaith School Turnaround Pilot, the program was created by the U.S. Department of Education, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
Investing in Education
Based on United Way’s investment in education, it was chosen to lead the local program in partnership with Orange County Public Schools, Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Cities of Service Orlando Cares initiative, the University of Central Florida and others.
To date, more than 800 community volunteers have been recruited to serve as tutors and mentors at Memorial Middle School and three Orange County elementaries, with roll out scheduled for additional Central Florida locations during the upcoming school year.
VISTAs will help recruit, train, engage and manage volunteers, who will work closely with students in improving attendance, behavior, academic performance and access to college. Participation requires a one-year commitment and includes a modest living allowance and end-of-year stipend through CNCS.
