The proposed constitutional amendment to limit the amount of money the state can spend was called “a looming problem,” by University of Florida President Bernie Machen.
Speaking at a Board of Governors meeting on Wednesday, Machen said the proposed constitutional amendment that would place caps on how much money the state can spend is a serious problem for universities.
“If you think we’ve got problems now, just take a look at the state of Coloardo,” Machen said.
Colorado had passed a similar state cap on revenues that opponents of TABOR, which stands for “Taxpayer Bill of Rights,” say has caused tremendous problems in that state.
“In Colorado we found higher education has lost significant ground in the last decade.” Machen made this point during a larger discussion of university budget troubles due to falling revenue from the state. “Any university in the system needs to look at becoming more self-reliant,” Machen warned.
