Students at the University of Central Florida demonstrated Thursday, against a proposed salary increase for UCF President John Hitt, but it was approved anyway.
The UCF Board of Trustees approved the base salary increase of $26,500 for the university head, who already commands a total annual salary of $741,500.
Students who protested the salary increase said, Hitt is already the ninth highest paid university president in the nation.
Protesting students characterized Hitt’s increase as “reprehensible” and “hypocritical,” particularly during a time of “supposed austerity” and when they themselves have had to endure four straight years of tuition hikes of 15 percent.
The frustrated students said that with Hitt’s raise, he is now the fifth most expensive university president in the country.
Today’s protest, outside the building where UCF Board of Trustees met, was attended by several university groups including, Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), National Organization for Women (NOW), Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX), Dream Defenders, and African Students Organization (ASO).
