Police have identified the two persons killed in a crash on SR 408, east of SR 441 early on Friday morning.
The deceased are: Aida Sotomayor, 23, of Merritt Island, the driver of a 2009 Mazda and Jerry R. Staggenborg, 19, of Timberlake Drive in West Melbourne, a passenger in the car.
Sotomayor, who was heading westbound on SR 408, crashed into a Nissan Armada, parked on the right shoulder of the roadway, police say.
Deyvi A. Castillo, 40, of Orlando, the driver of the Nissan Armada, told police he had lost control of his vehicle and had crashed into a concrete barrier. He had moved the vehicle onto to the shoulder of the roadway to inspect the damage and report the crash. Castillo said, while outside the vehicle he saw the Mazda approaching him at approximately 60-70 miles per hour and the vehicle spinning out of control. Sotomayor’s Madza struck the left side of the Nissan Armada.
Sotomayor and Staggenborg died on the spot. Both were wearing seat-belts at the time of the crash.
Castillo was taken to ORMC and is listed in stable condition.
Friday’s crash is Orlando’s third traffic homicide for 2011.
