Two Unrelated Early Morning Traffic Fatalities in Tampa

Two unrelated early morning traffic fatalities in Tampa are being investigated by police.

Tampa Police responded to a single-vehicle traffic fatality that occurred on S Dale Mabry Avenue just after midnight on May 23rd. Investigators believe speed was a major contributing factor in the crash.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2021 Toyota Camry was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on the Selmon Expressway connector from the Gandy Bridge. When attempting to exit onto the ramp to S Dale Mabry, the car struck the side wall. This caused the car to overturn and land in the southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway, coming to rest on the east side of Gandy Blvd.

The driver, a black male in his early 20s who was the only occupant of the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Tampa Police also responded to a pedestrian-related traffic fatality that occurred on Nebraska Avenue just after 5:30am on May 23rd.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross N. Nebraska Ave, westbound, outside of a crosswalk just south of E. Bougainvillea Ave. He was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe that was traveling southbound at the same time. The pedestrian, a white male in his late 20s, died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The driver, who remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, was not cited, according to law enforcement.

The tragic loss of any life on local roadways is always a serious concern. The Tampa Police Department is promoting traffic safety to prevent future tragedies on shared roadways. Along with obeying all traffic laws, some specific safety tips to keep in mind include:

Motorists:

  • Minimize distractions and focus on the roadway.
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, especially at intersections and crosswalks.
  • Never park in, or block, bike lanes – and give cyclists ample space when passing.
  • Keep up with vehicle maintenance ensuring headlights, taillights, turn signals, and brakes are all functioning properly.

Pedestrians:

  • Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective gear at night.
  • Look both ways before crossing and use designated crosswalks.
  • Minimize distractions and avoid using anything that could block out traffic sounds.
  • Be predictable by walking on sidewalks where available and following the flow of traffic.

Cyclists:

  • Use designated bike lanes.
  • Use hand signals to indicate turns.
  • Maintain your bike, making sure all equipment is in good condition.
  • Be visible by making sure your bike has reflectors and working lights for riding at night.
