The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) at Sawgrass Bay Elementary School recently welcomed 26 new members to its elite society.
Students were led into the assembly by a color guard from Cub Scout Pack 957. They then sat, ready to listen to words of wisdom from guest speaker Nancy Velez, Chief Academic Officer for Lake County Schools. Velez told the new inductees that she was proud of their accomplishments and that she was able to celebrate this milestone in their school career with the students.
“There is no doubt,” she told the students, families and friends, “that I am looking at the leaders of tomorrow.”
NEHS was established in 2008 to recognize students for outstanding academic achievement, personal responsibility, and leadership skills. A candlelight ceremony focused on the four key points of NEHS values: Scholarship, Responsibility, Service and Leadership. After students repeated the NEHS pledge and promised their commitment to excellence, service and leadership, they were welcomed as Sawgrass Bay’s newest Honor Society members by cheers from their fellow students.
“One of the requirements for these members is that they earn a minimum of 20 service hours, both in school and out, during the school year,” said Michelle Work, NEHS co-sponsor. “These students are very eager to help, and are high-achieving, academic students who should be able to assist with various tasks … such as being a teacher assistant, a peer tutor or a reading buddy.”
Sawgrass Bay’s NEHS 2011-2012 members are: Christina Ardizone, Bianka Brooks, Tyler Garcia, Widad Garib, Shanique Hinds, Madyson Hinson, Bayleigh Miller-Ulrich, Jason Pittman, Sierra Poppitt, Daunte Smith, Juliana Torres Espitia, Mohamed Alhajjeh, Natalie Carrillo, Victoria Cook, Abraham Corces, Michael Farrell, Brianna Garcia, Stanley Getty, Valeria Guzman, I’lion’I Payton, Garbiella Martinez, Nicole Myers, Jessica Rodriguez, Monica Roman, Alexandria Seelmeyer, and Sonny Rivera.
