Turkeys Get a Failing Grade

According to Good Guide, Turkeys, the food of American tradition and holiday memories, get a mere health rating of 3.8 out of 10.  While turkeys provide a good source of protein, they contain saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.   But, you can still enjoy your Thanksgiving turkey by arming yourself with the knowledge to pick a turkey that is free of artificial pesticides, fertilizers or antibiotics.

On GoodGuide.com you can now find ratings of turkeys and side dishes that you could serve at your Thanksgiving meal.

Holiday Turkey 2
* The highest rating was Diestel Farms Organic Turkey, which is free of artificial pesticides, fertilizers, or antibiotics, and had access to the outdoors.
* The worst rating was the Honeysuckle White Fully Cooked Hickory Smoked Whole Turkey, which had a whopping 1140 mg of sodium for a 4 oz serving. (The equivalent of eating 10 servings of Pringles chips in one sitting.)

Tips to Help You Pick a Turkey:

* If you really want to buy a pre-cooked turkey, go for plain old roasted rather than smoked.
* Skip the skin. Turkey skin is the least healthy part of a turkey. It also has the highest levels of cholestorol, which is harmful to heart health.
* If you’re cooking your own turkey, check for saltwater content before you buy.
