Florida Department of Law Enforcement DNA expert, Anthony Gorgone, testifying in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial on Wednesday, told jurors he found none of Zimmerman’s DNA under Trayvon Martin’s fingernails.
Gorgone also testified that he didn’t find the teen’s DNA on Zimmerman’s firearm either.
Zimmerman has said in statements to law enforcement that Martin reached for his gun during the fight and that’s when he [Zimmerman] fired the gun into Martin’s chest.
Gorgone said, however, he did find Zimmerman’s DNA on Martin’s hoodie and on a sweatshirt he wore underneath. None of Zimmerman’s DNA was found on the cuffs of Trayvon’s hoodie.
Prosecutor Bernie de La Rionda stressed to jurors that if Zimmerman was being beaten by Martin’s hands as he has claimed, there would have been DNA on the cuffs of the teen’s clothes.
Amy Siewert, another FDLE analyst, told jurors that tearing and residue on Martin’s clothing suggested that, Zimmerman’s gun was directly against Martin when he fired it.
Prosecutors have argued throughout the trial that, Zimmerman followed, profiled and ultimately shot and killed Martin, a 17-year-old black teen, because he believed he was up to no good.
Zimmerman has claimed, he shot Martin in self-defense.
Prosecutor are expected to call their final witnesses tomorrow and there is speculation that Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton and his brother, Jahvaris Martin will be among the last witnesses to testify, before the state rests.
