Tragedy on East Side: Child Killed, Sister Critically Injured

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol: December 25, 2010: Troopers have identified the 11-year-old child killed in the accident at Alafaya Trail and Science Drive on Thursday night.  The name of the child is Reina Rios.    Her sister, Jacquelyn Melcher, 17-years-old was also struck by a vehicle and was taken to ORMC in critical condition.

An 11-year-old child was killed and her older sister remains in critical condition after they were both struck while running across the intersection of Alafaya Trail and Science Drive on Thursday night on Orange County’s east side.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said that a Jeep SUV, driven by Rebecca Asuncion Guerra, 40, of Orange County and a Toyota Solara, driven by Shawn Matthew Damiano, 25, also of Orange County, were heading north on Alafaya Trail in the center lane around 7:00 pm on Thursday.

Two sisters, ages 11 and 17, were running across the intersection of Alafaya Trail and Science Drive, when they were struck by Guerra who had a green light.  The sisters were not in the cross walk.  After being struck by the Jeep SUV, while they both lay in the northbound lanes of traffic, Damiano’s vehicle struck the 11-year-old, who died on the spot. The older sister, was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

The names of the sisters have not been released.

Guerra, Damiano and a passenger traveling with him, Sonia T. Ramirez, 22 years, were not injured as a result of the accident.

Troopers said that the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
