Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda said Tuesday that the company would recall 437,000 of its 2010 Prius cars and other hybrids worldwide, because of a software glitch which affects the braking system.
Of the cars to be recalled, 223,000 are in Japan and 155,000 are in the United States. Toyota also plans to recall 270 plug-in Prius cars; 28,000 Lexus vehicles and 11,000 Sai hybrids.
In a separate recall, 7,300 late model Camrys in the U.S. have been identified as needing repairs to the brake tube, which has affected braking, Toyota indicated in a released statement.
Toyoda said that the company was working to retain the trust of it customers.
Toyota’s troubles will be the focus of a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, February 9th.
