Two students and an alternate are selected to represent Orange County Public Schools in the Sunshine State Scholars Program. It is a mathematics/science recognition program for high school juniors throughout Florida. The goals for the Sunshine State Scholars Recognition program are to recognize student achievement and to increase the number of students with outstanding mathematics and science credentials to attend Florida colleges and universities. The district scholars are:
· Bryan Peacker, Cypress Creek High School
· Charles Gregory Fussell, Apopka High School
· (Alternate) Hong –Nhi Le, Evans High School
In Orange County, 11 high schools submitted student nominees to the district for the selection committee’s review. The selection process included a written portion comprised of three questions answered prior to the interview and an oral portion in which the student selected one of the questions from the written portion to prepare and explain in detail to a committee during the interview. The Orange County District Scholars and their parents are invited to attend a state recognition program held in Orlando Feb. 21-22, 2013. They are also encouraged to invite one STEM teacher, who has influenced them the most, to attend as their guest.
