Tiger Wood, the world’s number one golfer, broke his three-month silence today and in a very controlled environment, apologized for the “irresponsible and selfish behavior” in which he had engaged.
Reading from a prepared text for about 14 minutes, from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour in Ponte Vedra Beach, Woods said, “I have let you down personally and professionally. I am so sorry.”
Woods admitted in his statement that he cheated, had affairs and was the only one to blame. Acknowledging the pain that he had caused his wife, Elin, his kids, other family members and fans, Woods apologized profusely saying that, “I have a long way to go”.
In seeking to explain his behavior, Woods said he had convinced himself that normal rules didn’t apply to him and felt he was entitled because of money and fame. Raised in the Buddhist faith which teaches “restraint”, Woods said he had lost track of what he was taught.
Acknowledging that there are many questions that the press and public would want answers to, Woods made clear that his behaviour was a matter between Elin and himself. Noting that the press had pursued his mother, wife and kids, Woods lashed out asking that they be left alone, given that he was the only one to blame.
Woods also debunked the many rumors that he was attacked by his wife when he crashed his car last Thanksgiving evening. “Elin never hit me that night or any other night,” he said. “There has never been an episode of domestic violence, never.” Elin deserves “praise and not blame.”
Indicating that he was in inpatient therapy for “the issues I am facing” for 45 days, Woods said he will be leaving for more treatment and therapy tomorrow.
Wood said that he “plans to return to golf one day”, but didn’t know when, although it could be later this year.
In closing, Woods reached out to his fans asking them to open their hearts and “to believe in me again”.
