A Port Orange driver was killed in a three-car collision on Interstate 4 near the St. John’s River Bridge in Volusia County, Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said, 38-year-old Brian Fitz-Gibbons, who was traveling eastbound on the I-4 in the center lane around 1:15 am, on Tuesday, died on the spot when his 1994 Jeep was struck in the rear by a Lexus driven by 27-year-old Eric Mendez, of Orange City.
Mendez, who was also in the center lane, was driving at a high rate of speed behind Fitz-Gibbons, and did not slow down, troopers said.
Fitz-Gibbons was pronounced dead on the scene by the medical examiner.
A third vehicle, a Buick van, driven by 23-year-old Krystle McFadden of Deltona, also heading eastbound and behind Fitz-Gibbons’ jeep and Mendez’ Lexus, was unable to avoid the collision, and also struck Fitz-Gibbons’ jeep.
McFadden suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was taken to Halifax Medical Center.
Mendez sustained minor injuries.
Troopers said, Mendez’ toxicology results are being awaited to determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash. Charges are pending against Mendez, FHP said.
The crash resulted in I-4 being closed for several hours.
