Thompson to Distribute 1,000 Free Back-to-School Backpacks

Orange County District 4 Commissioner Jennifer Thompson will host a Back to School Day event on Saturday, August 13th, from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Meadow
Woods Magic Recreation Center. The goal of the event is to provide 1,000 students and their families the tools needed to have a bright start to the 2011-2012 school year.

Commissioner Thompson has partnered with various community groups including Orange County Public School partner in education, FuelMySchool.com. Multiple community partners have stepped up to provide needed school supplies to students across Orange County including but not limited to Fairwinds Credit Union, who is holding a school supply drive across all 37 of their local Central Florida branches beginning today.

So far, Commissioner Thompson has helped collect over 1,000 backpacks to be distributed on the day of the event. Thus far, over 25 local businesses and community groups have committed to participating.

Various Orange County departments will also be on-hand to educate local citizens about important, free services provided through Orange County government as well.

“Back to school can be a very tough time for working families,” says Commissioner Thompson, “and anything that my office can do to make this time a little easier, we’re going to do.”
