Orange County Public Schools’ 2009 third-grade students posted the highest ever FCAT Math scores in county history. Those scoring at grade level or better rose to 73 percent, up from 70 percent. The three point improvement topped the overall state’s Math gains by one point.
In Reading, 69 percent of our third-grade students performed proficiently, holding even with last year’s result. The state average declined one percentage point.
Level 1 performers – those with the lowest scores – declined in numbers in 2009 to the lowest percentages in county history; which means 132 fewer OCPS students than last year are in danger of not being promoted to fourth grade.
Dr. Lee Baldwin, Senior Director of Accountability, Research and Assessment said, “I want to congratulate our teachers and principals on their hard work this year. This was an especially challenging year due to the distractions of budget cuts and financial shortfalls.”
