Tennis blanks Wekiva; Women’s Lacrosse trumps Freedom; Men’s Weightlifting Rocks Opener

Women’s Tennis (7-1) utilized a perfect sweep in singles, surrendering no games in any line, en route to a 7-0 victory over Wekiva. Maria Contreras, Zoe Monge, Sara Veugeler, Tyler Brown and Jasmin Stephney breezed through lines one through five, respectively, while the doubles teams of Elizabeth Heckbert and Stephanie Deeb (9-7) in line one and McKenzi Heide and Lindsey Haddock (8-3) completed the victory. Sarah Winslow and Marissa Priceman added a 6-3 win in a doubles exhibition line. The win marked the Panthers’ sixth shutout of the season.

Men’s Tennis had little trouble with visiting Wekiva as they rolled to a 7-0 victory to up their record to 7-1 on the season. Cooper Vissers (8-4), Peter San Pedro (8-2), Izzy Almontaser (8-0), Ajay Govindaraj (8-3) and Marcelo Govcalves (8-3) took lines one through five. Vissers and San Pedro doubled up the Mustangs in line one doubles, 8-4, while Almontaser and Govindaraj captured line two, 8-3. In exhibition play, Isaac Tsai won his singles match, 8-3, while the line three doubles team of Jeremy Bloom and Brett Fielder came away with a 6-1 victory as well.

Women’s Lacrosse bounced back from a tough loss to Lake Mary last week with a victory over visiting Freedom, 16-1, to move to 2-1 on the season. Three players racked up four goals each including Elizabeth Hales who also set the school record with eight assists! Freshman Cymber Larkin also scored four and assisted on two more and Katherine Breese notched four goals of her own. Michaela Decker scored twice and picked up an assist with Catherine Moffitt and Sarah Hamp completing the scoring. Mia Emmerson was spectacular in goal with nine saves. Not to be outdone, JV Lacrosse picked up their second win of the season with an 8-3 victory over Freedom. Jimena and Daniela Davila each scored a hat trick while Gabriella Carrifiello and Alena Poulin socred solo goals. Marilyn Davis and Nicole Mikeal split time in the cage and combined for seven saves.

Men’s Weightlifting opened up the 2012 season with dominating performances over Evans (59-28) and Olympia (59-30). Senior Brad Bindas shattered the school record in the 169 pound class for total weight (565 lbs) while overall first place finishes went to TJ Davis (129 lb class), Justyn Nakashima (139), Trent Massey (154), Brad Bindas (169), Chris Bishop (199) and Victor Clavier (238). Justus Griffith (119) placed first vs. Evans while Maurice Small (183) and Tadalion Colvin (HWY) each placed first in their respective classes against Olympia. DP (2-0) will travel to West Orange next Wednesday to face the host Warriors and Ocoee.

JV Baseball improved to 4-1 with a solid 6-4 victory over visiting Boone. Daniel Probst struck out eight over five ininngs without allowing an earned run to pick up the victory. Nick Mason went 1-3 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base and Brandon Portalatin was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored. They’ll be back in action Friday at Boone.

Tough night for both Softball and Baseball at Boone. Jecoliah Pratt struck out six over six innings but DP’s only hit on offense came from Marisa Lagos in the top of the seventh in a 2-0 loss to the Braves. Baseball couldn’t get the bats going at Boone either, unfortunately as the Braves silenced DP, 7-2, dropping the Panthers to 2-3 on the year.

Congratulations to coach Anthony Jones and the Women’s Basketball team for being named the Orlando Sentinel’s Team of the Week after capturing their second straight state Championship! This is the second time this year DP has been bestowed the honor with Women’s Cross Country earning the distinction back in October.
