Kaitlyn Hunt, the 18-year-old Florida high school student charged with a felony for engaging in a same-sex relationship with a 15-year-old girl at her high school, will face charges, notwithstanding the overwhelming public support that charges be dropped.
A state attorney said, charges will not be dropped against Hunt who is charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a child 12-16 years of age as a result of the relationship, according to cbsnews.com.
Since being expelled from Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Florida, for the underage relationship, a “Free Kate” Facebook, set up by her mother, Kelly Hunt Smith, has garnered more than 30,000 supporters. A similar petition established by her father, Steven Hunt has the support of close to 60,000, according to news reports.
Kaitlyn’s father has claimed that his daughter’s relationship with the 15-year-old girl was consensual and that her girlfriend’s parents went to police because they blamed Katilyn for their child’s homosexuality, WTSP reports.
