Taxpayers Chipping in for Casey Anthony Defense?

There is a very good chance that taxpayers would be picking up the tab for defending Casey Anthony.   Wftv reports that the Anthony defense team has filed a motion asked Judge Stan Strickland to declare their client indigent.  Given that Anthony is keeping her defense team in place, if the judge grants the motion, it would mean that Orange County taxpayers will end up picking up the tab for certain expenses associated with her defense.

“The defense team is faced with extensive costs to defend Miss Anthony, ensure she receives a fair trial, and prevent the State from taking her life. The initial cost estimates for defending Miss Anthony have been far exceeded by the additional costs incurred since the State’s decision to pursue the death penalty”, said a statement by the Anthony defense team, Wftv reports.   Such costs include travel, witness depositions, and the retention of experts, among others.

Many legal analysts believe that the judge will likely not deny the defense motion given that it is a murder case.

Anthony, 23, is charged with the murder of her two-year-old daughter Caylee and has been in the Orange County Jail since October 2008, awaiting trial.  She has said that her daughter was kidnapped by a baby sitter, although to date, there has been no evidence to support this.  Casey’s mother, Cindy Anthony, was the first to report her granddaughter missing, one month after she hadn’t see the child in early June 2008.  Caylee’s remains were later found in December 2008, in a wooded area in the vicinity of the Anthony family home.

If convicted, Anthony could face the death penalty.
