A Tampa Police officer was arrested after a domestic violence investigation.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested the Tampa Police Officer following a domestic violence investigation after deputies previously responded to Brandon Regional Hospital, where an adult female victim was being treated for injuries consistent with a physical battery.
Detectives determined the injuries were the result of an altercation between the victim and 47-year-old Steven Barber.
According to local law enforcement, Barber repeatedly struck the victim by slapping, punching, and kicking her. Barber also placed the victim in a headlock that restricted her ability to breathe.
HCSO’s Domestic Violence Detectives conducted interviews with the victim and witnesses.
Based on the evidence collected, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Barber on charges of Domestic Violence Battery by Strangulation, False Imprisonment, and Domestic Violence Battery.
Barber was taken into custody in Pinellas County on the outstanding warrant.
Barber was employed as a police officer with the Tampa Police Department and served as a U.S. Army Reserve Criminal Investigations Division Special Agent at the time of arrest.
“The actions described in this case are disturbing and completely unacceptable,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “No badge, no title, and no rank will ever excuse violence inside the home. Our detectives worked quickly to make this arrest, and we will always stand with survivors and hold abusers accountable.”
