Democratic Tampa Congresswoman Kathy Castor said that Republicans are putting Americans’ safety at risk and is blaming them for the government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
U.S. Representative Kathy Castor, a Tampa Democrat, called out House Republicans for failing to reform Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), saying there are not any guardrails or protections “to keep Americans safe following well-documented abuses.”
The Central Florida Congresswoman previously cited “ongoing abuses” as a reason she voted no on DHS funding. She also called on Congress to pass her legislation on the matter.
“President Trump and Congressional Republicans refuse to reform ICE to increase public safety after the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in the streets of Minneapolis,” stated Tampa Rep. Kathy Castor. “House Republicans are enabling significant abuses of power and holding hostage the rest of the Department of Homeland Security, including TSA, Coast Guard and FEMA. Republicans should at least pass legislation I cosponsor to fund these agencies while negotiations over ICE reforms continue.”
The Tampa Democrat also made a few demands, including having President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans to come to the negotiating table.
“I cannot sanction taxpayer dollars being misused to brutalize U.S. citizens and immigrant families,” stated Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor. “The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress must come to the negotiating table on ICE funding and policies, and until they do, they must pass House Democrats’ legislation to fully fund the law-abiding components of DHS, including FEMA, TSA and the United States Coast Guard.”
