Kevin P. Nyako, 17, who was walking on Michigan Avenue with two other students, was stopped and questioned by an officer.  Nyako told the officer that he was released early from school.  This turned out not to be the case.   Based on questioning, the officer determined Nyako to be a truant.   Upon getting permission to search his back pack, the officer found a package wrapped in clear tape with black and red wire sticking out.  The package contained a liquid which turned out to be alcohol.

The Fire Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene and it was subsequently determined that the device inside the back pack was a hoax.

During the investigation, Blankner and Boone High Schools near Harding and Mills Avenue were locked down for about two hours.

Nyako  was arrested and charged with Possession of a hoax device, Possession of alcohol by a minor and Disruption of a school.
