Suspect’s Scent Leads Deputies to $300,000 Grow House Bust

Michel L. Cabrera

A man who ran a marijuana grow house in DeLand has been arrested, after deputies picked up the odor of pot while patrolling in the Lake Mack area on Thursday.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies said the smell of marijuana came from a residence located at 43901 Cooter Pond Road, from which a BMW was seen leaving the residence.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the BMW and detected the scent of marijuana coming from the driver, 34-year-old Michel L. Cabrera.   A search of the vehicle turned up plastic baggies and a scale.

A search warrant for the residence was obtained where narcotics detectives discovered an indoor marijuana grow house operation, including 97 mature marijuana plants and pre-packaged marijuana valued at over $300,000.  Detectives seized the BMW, two large box trucks, and a 30 foot offshore boat, all valued of just over $100,000.

Cabrera was arrested and booked on charges related to the marijuana grow house operation.

Deputies believe that the home is shared with another individual, who was not present at the time of the bust.
