Suspect Shoots Himself as U.S. Marshals Attempt to Serve Warrant

A man wanted for murder and attempted murder in North Carolina took his own life inside a hotel on West Colonial Drive on Friday, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies said.

U.S. Marshals went to the Palace Hotel and Resort to serve an out of state warrant on the murder suspect,  when they heard two gunshots inside room #160.  The takedown team took cover and requested additional units, including from SWAT Team members.

Deputies say, nearby rooms were evacuated and units operating under the agency’s High Risk Incident Command began the tactical operation of removing the murder suspect from the room.

After several failed attempts to make contact with the suspect, the SWAT Team deployed gas into the room around 2:20 p.m., entering several minutes later.  The suspect was found dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies have not released the name of the murder suspect, pending a positive identification and notification of next of kin.

West Colonial Drive, a major east-west highway in Orange County was shut down in both directions in both directions for about two hours, reopening about 3:00 p.m.
