In a 5-4 decision the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, struck down same-sex marriage bans nationwide, affirming that it is legal for all Americans to marry the people they love.
The decision is a major win for gay rights activists and follows public opinion where several polls showed that, about 60 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage rights.
Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia already recognize marriage equality. Â The remaining 13 states ban these unions.
In 2012, President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to support marriage equality.
