In a 5-4 decision the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, struck down same-sex marriage bans nationwide, affirming that it is legal for all Americans to marry the people they love.
The decision is a major win for gay rights activists and follows public opinion where several polls showed that, about 60 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage rights.
Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia already recognize marriage equality. The remaining 13 states ban these unions.
In 2012, President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to support marriage equality.
