Sup. Ronald Blocker is the Top “Reader” in the State

Superintendent Ronald Blocker

The Just Read, Florida! division of the Florida Department of Education announced Superintendent Ronald Blocker has been named the 2010 District Reading Leader of the Year for the state.

Principal Margaret McMillen of Boone High School is the High School Reading Leader of the Year in Florida and principal Kathryn Shuler of Mollie Ray Elementary School earned the number one position as statewide Elementary School Reading Leader of the Year.

Just Read, Florida! acknowledges educators for their commitment to literacy among all students and the ability to foster excellence in literacy education. They were selected as number one in the state in their respective categories. There are 13 categories. The selections show that Superintendent Blocker and principals McMillen and Shuler display intense focus on student achievement.

Margaret McMillan

Orange County Public Schools is rated A by the Florida Department of Education. Superintendent Blocker says, “I don’t believe in leaving anything to chance so reading instruction is guided by a centrally-controlled comprehensive plan, the K-12 Reading Plan. Non-negotiable standards and requirements ensure that all learners receive quality instruction.”

Boone High School, under the leadership of Margaret McMillen, has improved its school grade from a B to an A. McMillen’s culture of literacy on campus extends to each classroom where all teachers display posters on their doors showing students the titles and authors they are reading currently.

Kathryn Shuler

Principal Kathryn Shuler at Mollie Ray Elementary School was a statewide sensation last summer for having led her school from an F to an A in just one year. Shuler requires weekly assessments of all students to identify strengths and weaknesses in reading.
