On Monday, the proposed SunRail commuter system connecting Deland and Metro Orlando, in a 4-3 vote, narrowly cleared a key Senate transportation committee. In what is guaranteed to be a contentious debate, the bill moves closer to being put before the full Senate.
SunRail, the 61.5 mile rail system is likely to cost the federal government, the state and five local partners — Volusia, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties and Orlando– $2.7 billion over 30 years.
Proponents — including an array of powerful Central Florida business interests — say it’s a necessary long-term transportation option in the growing Interstate 4 corridor.
They also say failure would endanger future federal transportation for similar state projects.
