The State Board of Education will vote later today on whether to revise downward the passing grade of the 2012 FCAT writing proficiency test. An emergency meeting has been called owing to the poor student results obtained on the test.
Preliminary results indicate a high proportion of students in Grades 4, 8, and 10, failed the test after the passing grade was raised from 3.5 to 4.0 on a scale of zero to six.
At the Grade 4 level, 27 percent of students scored at the threshold level of 4.0 or above, compared to 81 percent last year. Similar results were obtained for students in Grades 8 and 10.
Now, the same State Board of Education that changed the requirements and revised the passing grade upward could vote to revise it downward. The poor students results obtained have major implications for schools’ rankings and in turn for school districts, parents, students and tax-payers.
