The fallout from a budget standoff between the House and Senate could hit taxpayers even harder this year as lawmakers braced Tuesday for overtime at $40,000 a day.
If Republican leaders blow a May 1 deadline to adjourn and run up overtime charges, it would be adding insult to injury, warned Senate Democratic Leader Al Lawson of Tallahassee.
House and Senate leaders have yet to schedule the first public conference negotiating meeting, and the deadline for getting a budget to the printers is Wednesday. After that, lawmakers face a 72-hour, constitutionally mandated cooling-off period before they can take a final vote.
