St. Petersburg Police Arrest 16-Year-Old Cop Killer

A teen responsible for the murder of a St. Petersburg cop on Monday night was taken into custody on Tuesday evening.

Nicholas L. Lindsey, 16, is suspected of shooting at close range, Officer David Crawford around 10:37 p.m. on Monday night, after the officer went to the 700 block of 3rd Avenue South to investigate a potential burglary.

Officer Crawford was responding to a call from a resident indicating that a man was observed holding a broken brick in his hand and it was though he was trying to commit a burglary in the area.  Officer Crawford, who had searched the area in his cruiser, found the man and had just come out of his cruiser, when the suspect, who later turned out to be Lindsay, shot in several time at point blank range.

Officer Crawford was taken to the Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A massive manhunt was launched by police and the FBI for the suspect.

Nicholas Lindsay who was captured on Tuesday night, without incident.

St. Petersburg Police Chief Charles “Chuck” Harmon said, Lindsey broke down when he was taken into custody, seemed remorseful and confessed to killing Officer Crawford.  Harmon offered no motive for the crime, but noted that Lindsey does have a criminal history.

A reward of $100,000, including $50,000 had been offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of Officer Crawford’s killer.
