Soto: Teacher Debit Card Program Broken

If Senator Darren Soto (District 14) has his way, teachers would receive school supply debit cards two weeks before the start of the school year.

Soto, who unveiled his own plan on Wednesday for helping teachers purchase classroom supplies said, Gov. Rick Scott’s teacher debit card program is “broken.”

In addition to receiving the school debit cards two weeks before kids head back to school, Soto said, elementary school teachers would receive $250 while middle and high school teachers would receive $500 and $750, respectively.

Only seven of Florida’s 67 school districts have signed up so far for Scott’s new teacher debit card program, according to news reports.  School districts have shied away from the $250 debit cards as they won’t be available until September, long after students have returned to classes.
