The Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation, on Apopka-Vineland Boulevard next to the Jewish Community Center, will devote the Sunday morning between the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur doing mitvahs, (hebrew for good deeds) for their congregation and community.  From 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM the congregation will hold a food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank and a blood drive in cooperation with the Central Florida Blood Bank.  All members of the community are welcome to bring non-perishable food and give blood.

Members of the congregation will make sandwiches to donate to Second Harvest, while others will decorate the congregations Succah, and prepare the temple for upcoming Yom Kppur services.  Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is considered the holiest day of the Jewish year.  Jews around the world will fast and spend much of the day in prayer.

SOJC Board member Brett Spector is organizing Mitzvah Day.  “We think it’s important, especially at this time of year, to give back to our community,” Spector said.
