Small Plane Crashes in Lake Apopka

A small plane crashed in Lake Apopka on Tuesday morning, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies said.

The crash occurred just after 10:30 a.m.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office dispatched a helicopter and once overhead, Chase officers saw a man swimming away from the wreck.

Orange County Fire Rescue also responded to the lake.

An Orange County Sheriff airboat was able to reach the pilot, the lone occupant of the plane.  He was subsequently treated by Orange County Fire Rescue personnel.

The unnamed pilot told deputies he was flying an ultra-light plane and the conditions were “less than favorable for landing.”  He told deputies his plane nose-dived into the water, but he was able to escape the wreck. The pilot was unharmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
