Six health practitioners were suspended over the past week, the Florida Department of Health (DOH) announced on Tuesday.
DOH issued an Emergency Suspension Order (ESO), suspending the following health practitioners from practicing in Florida.
Over following ESOs were filed:
Joseph Brown, R.P.H., Lake Worth. Brown admittedly violated Florida Statute 8913.13(6) (a) by possessing a controlled substance without a prescription.
Shelby N. Dickens, C.N.A., St. Petersburg. Dickens entered pleas of guilty to two counts of Sale of Oxycodone, two counts of Sale of Alprazolam, two counts of Possession of Oxycodone, one count of Possession of Alprazolam, one count of Possession of Oxycodone with Intent to Sell, one count of Possession of Marijuana and one count of Criminal Mischief.
Michael G. Hammonds, D.D.S., Deltona. Hammonds operated a dental office in such a manner as to result in dental treatment that is below minimum acceptable standards of performance for the community; directly engaged in misconduct in the practice of dentistry by using illegal force/violence upon an elderly patient; found guilty of incompetence or negligence by failing to meet the minimum standards of performance in diagnosis and treatment when measured against generally prevailing peer performance, in that the illegal use of force/violence upon a patient fails to meet the minimal prevailing standard of care for dental treatment; and unable to practice dentistry with reasonable skill and safety to patients by reason of illness or use of alcohol, drugs, narcotics, chemicals, or any other type of material or as a result of any mental or physical condition, in that this type of behavior by a professional toward his elderly patients is not within the norm for accepted treatment protocol.
Riyaz A. Jummani, M.D., Orlando. Jummani prescribed several potentially addictive controlled pain medications to patients notwithstanding the patients openly exhibited drug-seeking behavior and demonstrated a lack of need for the medication; prescribed controlled substances to patients on multiple occasions without conducting complete physical examinations of the patients; demonstrated a flagrant disregard for the duties and responsibilities imposed upon a physician practicing in the State of Florida and for the health and welfare of his patients; and inappropriately prescribed addictive and dangerous drugs constitutes a breach of the trust and confidence that the Legislature placed in him by issuing him a license to practice medicine.
Michael McGee, L.M.T., Olympia Fields, Illinois. McGee used his massage therapist-client relationship to induce, attempt to engage or engage them in sexual activity and failed to practice massage with that level of care, skill and treatment that is acceptable under the circumstances when he engaged or attempted to engage patients in sexual activity while giving them a message.
Stacey Renee Peternel, R.N., Green Cove Springs. Peternel engaged in unprofessional conduct by testing positive for any drugs on her drug screen without a prescription or legitimate medical reason for using such drug.
