Six-Car Pile-up Leaves One Man Dead, One Other Seriously Injured

An elderly man was killed and the driver of a Chevy pick-up seriously injured in a six-car pile up on US Highway 27, in Lake County on Friday.

The pile-up occurred just after 5:00 p.m., on US Highway 27, south of Citrus Tower Boulevard.

Troopers said, 21-year-old Christopher Phillips, of Rome, Georgia, driving a Chevy pick-up, was traveling north on US Highway when he rear-ended the back of a Mercedes stopped ahead of him at a red traffic light.

Phillips continued north and rear-ended a Dodge Van driven by 78-year-old Kantilal Patel of Clermont, who then rear ended a 2008 Toyota stopped ahead of him at the traffic light. The Toyota then struck the rear of a Honda van, that in turn rear-ended a 2006 Chevy SUV.

Patel was taken to South Lake Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Phillips was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, with serious injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, 50-year-old Steven Koonter, of Louisville, Kentucky, and three passengers in that vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Ronald Huber, 84, of Daventport, the driver of the Toyota, suffered minor injuries. His passenger, Diana Huber, 78, sustained no injuries.

The drivers of the Honda van and Chevy SUV, sustained no injuries.

The flow of traffic was adversely affected while emergency service personnel cleared the scene.

Troopers said, the investigation continues into this crash and charges are pending.
