Siplin to Conduct Fact-Finding Inquiry in Sanford

Florida State Senator Gary Siplin (D-Orlando) will take his legislative office on the road to host the “Sanford Road to Recovery” Town Hall Meeting, as a result of the ongoing investigation into the Trayvon Martin shooting and increasing citizen concerns.

Siplin will set up temporary post at the Saint James A.M.E. Church, where he will conduct a fact-finding inquiry regarding recurring instances of civil rights violations in the African American community. This meeting will lead to an investigation regarding alleged institutional racism in Sanford, which will be presented in a Senate hearing for review.

Late last month at a news conference, Siplin revealed his plans to hold fact finding missions to hear first hand what African Americans are subjected to in Sanford. On that occasion, Siplin said he was unaware of how Blacks are treated when stopped by Sanford police officers and opined that, “more must be done to break with the ‘Plantation Culture’ which best characterizes the city of Sanford.”

Siplin said, he is “looking forward to meeting and hearing from the people in Sanford.”

WHEN: Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
WHERE: Saint James A.M.E. Church, 819 Cypress Avenue, Sanford, Florida 32771
