Siblings, Ex-HMO Executives Arrested

Two executives – brother and sister – of a liquidated Tampa HMO have been arrested amid allegations that they provided misleading financial information to state insurance regulators, state Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced Wednesday.

The allegations center on Tampa-based Quality Health Plans, Inc., which a Leon County circuit judge ordered into liquidation in November.

A news release from Atwater’s office said the HMO’s chief executive officer, Sabiha Khan, and vice president, Nazeer Khan, face felony charges after providing misleading information “to prolong the appearance of financial stability to allow QHP to reap financial benefits when the company had long been insolvent and did not have required assets on hand to pay claims.”

Information on the state Department of Financial Services’ website indicates Quality Health Plans started operating in 2003 and had about 10,000 Medicare subscribers.
