Val Demings, Orange County mayoral candidate announced Tuesday that she will end her bid for mayor. The surprise announcement shocked many throughout Orange County.
Demings’ campaign issued the following statement:
After careful consideration including consultations with family and close supporters, Val Demings, former police chief of Orlando has announced that she will not seek the office of Orange County Mayor. “I am humbled by and grateful for the support I have received from every corner of our county. After careful analysis I have determined that this is just not the right race at this time” said Demings.
A former police chief with an exemplary record of service, Demings is considered to be a rising star in Florida Democratic politics. The campaign received support from key constituencies in Orange County despite facing an incumbent in August. “There are many ways to contribute to my community. My commitment to the place I call home didn’t begin with this campaign and certainly doesn’t end with it. I will continue to explore ways to make our great county a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family” Demings concluded.
“I thought long and hard about the mayoral race. And having served as Chief of Police in an executive position – setting goals, making sure those goals were seen through – I thought that running for Orange County Mayor would be something where I could really have a hands-on opportunity to make change in my community. In making that decision, I talked to lots of people, met with many different groups, prayed about it, discussed it with my family and of course had their blessings and their support, and ultimately chose to run for Orange County Mayor.”
