Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings announcing arrest of seven suspects, seizure of firearms and cash, at OCSO Substation, Pine Hills, May 20, 2011

Speaking at a media briefing at the OCSO Sub-Station in Pine Hills, Demings said seven arrests–three women and four men–were made on Thursday morning, after a search warrant was executed on  a home located at 2420 Queensway Road in Orlando, where firearms, including two assault rifles were recovered, over 273 grams of marijuana found and almost $162,000 in cash seized.

The operation’s success came as a result of collaboration between the Problem Oriented Policing (POPS) and Drug Units of the Sheriff’s Office and proactive patrol detail in the Pine Hills area, Demings said.

“The arrests of seven suspects yesterday, is another good example of our deputies on proactive and preventative patrols collaborating closely with our POPS and Drug Units,” said Demings. “The community partnership that has been built up with the residents of the area and our deputies has helped to make us most effective in fighting crime.”

Demings, as he announced the drug and firearms bust, was flanked by several of his deputies, including Sergeant Jim DeLeu, who lead the operation on Thursday and Deputy Sheriff Quincy Alleyne of  the POPS Unit.  Also present were several community members, including Hardee’s restaurant owner, Tim Haberkamp, Pastor of the Divine Way Ministries, Rev. Mike Kimborough, and Mrs. Bertina Busch of the Pine Hills Community Council.

Commenting on the drug bust, DeLeu said, deputies had been proactively investigating the location when, on Thursday morning while on detail, a suspect was observed throwing what appeared to be contraband into the bushes. Two other suspects appeared to be hiding and discarding suspected illegal drugs at the same time.  Deputies, POPS and Drug Units working the detail conducted a consensual encounter with the three men, at which time the smell of burning cannabis was detected. Deputies also detected the odor of burning cannabis coming from inside the home from the open door.
